What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder in which your breathing stops and starts repeatedly. What happens is the soft tissues in your mouth become more relaxed while you are sleeping, causing your airway to become blocked. Most people do not even know they have, but if left untreated, sleep apnea can harm your overall health.

There are two types of sleep apnea – obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA).

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea happens because there is an issue with the mechanics of your breathing. While you’re asleep the soft tissue in your mouth, such as your tongue, becomes more relaxed. This can cause your airway to become blocked and your breathing to stop. A few common risk factors are being overweight, having a narrow throat, allergies, and hypothyroidism.

  • Central Sleep Apnea

Central sleep apnea happens because your brain and breathing muscles are not communicating properly. This causes your breathing to stop or for you to breathe so lightly, you cannot get enough oxygen. Doctors have not figured out the main cause of CSA, but some illnesses, medications, and environments can be linked.

Sleep Apnea Symptoms

  • Loud snoring
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Episodes of stopped breathing while asleep (observed by a partner or family member)
  • Sudden awakenings followed by gasping or choking
  • Waking up with a headache, sore throat, dry mouth, or combination
  • Mood changes or irritability throughout the day

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, talk to your dentist or primary care physician about being tested for sleep apnea.
